Walt and Elspeth Rostow
Walt and Elspeth Rostow had vision and the talent and dedication to propel others into action. Walt Rostow was a renowned economist, an advisor to President Johnson who focused his career on national and international issues. Elspeth Rostow had impressive academic credentials and was an internationally recognized expert in the area of public policy. She was Dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs and taught courses on the American Presidency and U. S. foreign policy at the School.
In founding The Austin Project, the Rostows took the experiences they had gained from their national and international careers and applied their wisdom and energy to urban and local issues. Their goal was for all children to have equal opportunities for a healthy childhood, a good education, and a bright future. The Rostows galvanized many of Austin’s most prominent academics and community members to launch The Austin Project. They promoted a broad-scope approach that emphasizes prevention initiatives and grassroots engagement of neighborhoods to build safe, healthy, and productive communities. Walt and Elspeth Rostow left a great legacy. The board of directors and staff are dedicated to their vision and example. We honor Elspeth and Walt by doing our part to continue to grow and to rededicate ourselves to their important work.
