The Austin Project would like to offer sincere thanks to those who were able to attend the Rostow Awards Dinner marking our organization’s 20th anniversary. We are pleased to announce that we have video of the event posted to our website: board member Bob Rutishauser provides an overview of the history of the organization and the vision of our founders Walt and Elspeth Rostow, while this year’s honorees, Judge Samuel T. Biscoe and Dr. Michael Marder, discuss the current state of education and social services in the Austin community.

Again, many thanks to our supporters and to the organizers of this event. The Rostow Awards are what allow us to continue our efforts to strengthen families, improve education, and promote early literacy in the Austin community. Here’s to another 20 years!

This is the second year that TAP and SafePlace have partnered to offer workshops to prepare parents for their child’s transition into middle school. This year we were pleased to incorporate a new parent-youth dialogue that allowed parents and kids to share what they had learned in their individual workshop sessions as well as their hopes and fears about the transition to a new school. We’ve had some great feedback from attendees so far, and we look forward to meeting even more families at our future workshops.

As we move into the new year, The Austin Project would like to take the opportunity to highlight the progression of one of our major initiatives: the Middle School Parent Transition Initiative. The Parent Transition Initiative (PTI) is designed to address parents’ concerns about the transitions their kids will experience as they move from elementary school to middle school and from childhood to adolescence.

These transitions can be difficult, particularly for economically and socially disadvantaged youth, and can be accompanied by behavioral problems and a drop in academic performance. At the same time, research shows that 1) parent and school connectedness can help protect kids from risk behaviors and help them do better in school, and 2) youth who have positive, supportive relationships at home and with their peers double their chances of achieving optimal developmental outcomes by the end of high school. The Parent Transition Initiative, then, is designed to foster both parent and school connectedness and supportive relationships — and in doing so, to make the transition to middle school a positive experience for students.

Initial meetings were held in the spring of 2010 with parents at elementary schools that feed into Burnet, Mendez, and Webb Middle Schools in order to identify parent interests and concerns. During the summer, parents were invited to participate in a three-hour workshop at their child’s new school, during which they were provided with parenting strategies, tools to promote healthy teen relationships, a support network, leadership opportunities, and an introduction to additional school and community resources.

Preliminary outcomes for the initiative indicate that parents felt significantly more positive about their child’s transition to middle school after the workshop. 87% reported a better understanding of safety issues and how to keep their child safe at school and in the community; 84% reported their intention to remain actively involved with the middle school; 79% reported having a better understanding of the goals of Positive Behavior Support; 90% reported feeling more comfortable about discussing healthy relationships with their child; and 93% reported having increased their skills for communicating with their child.

The Parent Transition Initiative is coordinated by The Austin Project and SafePlace together with the AISD Office for Parent Support, Positive Behavior and Support, and Start Strong Austin!, a community collaboration to build healthy teen relationships funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. For more information on discussing healthy relationships with teens, visit Start Strong Austin’s parenting resources.

It was our great pleasure to have Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo as our emcee (we’re sorry about your tie!) and we were thrilled to have Jerry Jeff Walker join us for a surprise performance. Most of all, we were honored to present our Leadership Award to Paul Carrozza and our Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Stephen Kinslow; the great turnout for this event and the videos carefully put together by friends and colleagues allowed us to see firsthand what an inspiration these two community leaders have been within their respective fields of fitness and education.

We have many people to thank individually in the days to come, but in the meantime please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your support. Thanks to your generosity, TAP will be able to continue its efforts to strengthen families, improve education, and promote early literacy.
